Charlie learned about Earth Day last week in preschool.
A big fan of birthdays, she came home and made "Earth" a card and put it in our mailbox. (She thinks that if you make something for someone and put it in the mailbox that the mailman will take it to that person.) She does things like this a lot. I didn't even know she had made a card for "Earth" although I did see the crafts everyday in the mailbox. I usually leave them there a few days before taking them out and getting rid of them.
She also checks the mail everyday and asks if there is anything for her. I'll usually give her the junk mail and tell her it's hers.
After a few days of checking she became a little frustrated. "Isn't there anything for me?"
"What are you expecting?"
"I sent Earth a birthday card. Why isn't he writing me back?"
I looked at the stack of mail I had just brought in and noticed a flyer for yard landscaping. It had pictures of trees and grass and all the writing was in green.
"Oh! Look! I must have missed it! Here's your letter from Earth!"
She was so excited and asked me to read it to her. I don't remember what I said..just made something up.
Well today Kenzie was over to play. I heard Charlie explaining the story of sending Earth a card and getting a letter back. Kenzie seemed interested although a little skeptical and asked to see it. Moments later Charlie produced the landscaping flyer. Kenzie knows how to read so I knew this was not going to end well.
I quickly but casually walked up beside Kenzie and snatched it out of her hands while asking, "Who wants a snack?!"
"I do! I do!"
Crisis averted. I guess I should just explain to Charlie that although the Earth is living (which she was told in school), it is not a person who can send her mail. But a 5 year old probably wouldn't have explained it so lovingly!
I've got some great pictures to share of Charlie lovin' the Earth!

Sweet pictures of Charlie. I didn't know she was so interested in getting mail...must do something about that.
